준식민화 전쟁과 근대 지구적 국제질서: 탈식민주의 불균등결합발전론으로 본 아편전쟁 = Quasi-Colonial Wars and the Rise of the Modern Global International Order: The Opium Wars through a Postcolonial Perspective on the Theory of Uneven and Combined Development

국문 초록 (Abstract)

근대 국제관계의 형성을 추동한 전쟁은 어떤 전쟁이며, 근대 국제관계는 어떻게 형 성되었는가? 전통론은 유럽의 영토주권국가 간 전쟁과 유럽의 주요 세력 간 전쟁만을 국제관계의 형성과 변화에 주요하게 작용한 대전쟁으로 상정하였다. 이와 같은 문제의 식에서, 본 논문은 작은 전쟁으로 개념화된 식민화 및 준식민화 전쟁 중 아편전쟁이 어 떻게 근대 지구적 국제질서의 형성에 작용하였는지를 로젠버그(Justin Rosenberg)의 불균등결합발전론(uneven and combined development)에 기반하여 살펴본다. 이를 통해 본 논문은 기존연구가 아편전쟁을 근대 지구적 국제질서가 형성됨으로써 나타난 결과적 사건으로 해석했던 것과 다르게, 19세기 중후반 동양에서 벌어진 대규모의 준식 민화 전쟁으로서 근대 지구적 국제질서의 형성을 추동하였음을 주장한다.

What wars led to the rise of modern international relations? How did modern international relations come into existence? It is widely accepted that modern international relations arose from wars; however, traditional theories often overlook the specific types of wars that facilitated this transition. Instead, these theories typically assume that modern international relations emerged from major wars, particularly those between the territorially sovereign states of Western Europe or the great powers of the region. Drawing on Justin Rosenberg’s theory of uneven and combined development, this article challenges such assumptions by examining the role and influence of the Opium Wars, conceptualized as a 'small war,' in the rise of modern international relations. In contrast to existing studies that interpret the Opium Wars as a consequential event in the rise of the modern global order, this article argues that they were crucial to the rise of modern international relations as a quasi-colonial war in the mid-to-late nineteenth century.
