Catecholamine has various pharmacological effets. This might be due largely to its relation to the sympathetic nervous system.
Reserpine has been widely used as a tranquilizer and anti-hypertensive drug in the obstetrical and gynecological field for the past 20 years in spite of a number of untoward side effects affecting various organs.
An attempt has been to clarify the effects of reserpine on the catecholamine content in the uterine and liver tissue of mature female albino rabbits weighing around 2㎏.
A group of albino rabbits conditioned with 50 I.U./㎏ of HCG and another group with 1.0mg/㎏ of reserpine plus 50 I.U./㎏ of HCG were observed in 24 hours after conditioning.
Catecholamine content was determined by Shore and Olin method.
The results obtained were as follows;
1. The catecholamine content in the normal uterine tissue averaged 0.4±0.12 ㎍/gm, while that of the liver tissue 0.17±0.03 ㎍/gm. Therefore catecholamine content in the uterine tissue was much higher than that of the liver tissue.
2. In the HCG-conditioned group, the catecholamine content in the uterine tissue showed a marked decreasecompared to the normal rabbit group. But there was no remarkable change in content of the liver tissue (0.15±0.02 ㎍/gm).
3. In the reserpine plus HCG-conditioned group, the catecholamine content in the uterine tissue was remarkably decreased (0.06±0.02 ㎍/gm) and the liver tissue, 0.08±0.02 ㎍/gm respectively.
4. The catecholamine content in the uterine tissue of the reserpine plus HCG-conditioned group(0.06±0.02 ㎍/gm) showed much more decrease than that of the HCG-conditioned group(0.13±0.05 ㎍/gm).
5. The catecholamine content in the liver tissue showed no significant difference between normal rabbits(0.17±0.03 μg/gm) and HCG-conditioned group (0.15±0.02 ㎍/gm), but showed remarkable decrease in the reserpine plus HCG-conditioned group (0.08±0.02 ㎍/gm).
6. In the normal group, catecholamine content in the uterine tissue(0.40±0.12 ㎍/gm) was much higher than that in the liver tissue (0.17±0.03 ㎍/gm), but there was no significant difference between the uterus and the liver of the HCG-conditioned groups (0.13±0.05, 0.08±0.02 ㎍/gm). In the liver tissue, both the HCG-conditioned(0.15±0.02 ㎍/gm) and reserpine plus HCG-conditioned group (0.08±0.02 ㎍/gm) showed rather slightly higher than those of the uterine tissue(0.13±0.05, 0.06±0.02 ㎍/gm).
