Viviparous germination became a more serious problem in rice production where more diverse cropping system is adopted recently. Identification and cultivation of varieties of less viviparous germination is the most important to reduce the risks. In a controlled experiment, the conventional germination tests in petri-dishes appeared to be a valid method in evaluation of viviparous germination. The most important varietal traits related to viviparous germination would be dormancy. In addition, germiability under low temperature appeared to be important also. Comparing Japonica and Indica/Japonica varieties, Indica/Japonica varieties had stronger dormancy and poor germination under low temperatures than Japonica varieties in general, which are desirable traits for less viviparous germination. However, there were several of exceptional varieties indicating the possibilities of breeding varieties of wide ranges of both traites in Indica/Japonica and Japonica varieties.
