The increase of height and number of buildings, and population result in poor condition of city environment. In order to restore the environment and let people come in contact with the environment, green roof is looked as the most effective solution. Accordingly the federal and local governments provide the regulations, various systems, and finance. In particular, compared to other local governments, Seoul retains many experience and differentcases, because, unlike other cities, it has been supporting the green roof project since 2002. In 2008, the green roof project is renamed to green garden project, because the project involves improving city scenery and making the roof where people can come and rest. Thus, to provide a place where people can use and participate, the roof garden needs to be safe and aesthetic.
In 2007, with the support from the government of Seoul, the roof gardens have been analyzed according to their visual and aesthetics. The research will provide data and sources to make the roof gardens more useful and artistic.
The subject of research has been separated into four different space composition factors: planting, facility, water space, and pavement. Then it is separated into eight different principles of design: unity, proportion, contrast, repetition, balance, rhythm, symmetry, and emphasis. A field study and photographs are collected as data.
The summary of the study results is as follows,
1. The status of building usage is as follows. There are eight education facilities, three religious facilities, a medical, a broadcasting station, a medical treatment, and a general building. Out of these facilities, ten of them are opened to public, and other three requires permission to enter and use. Hospitals, universities, and broadcasting stations have the most number of participants.
2. The following analysis is the application of the principle of modeling in different subjects. A design cannot be evaluated as a good design mainly because a lot of the principle of modeling is applied. But, according to the research, design that applied a lot of the principle of modeling is valued to be more useful and comfortable.
3. The following analysis is the application of the principle of modeling in different space composition factor. First, in many facilities, repetition of plant occurs continuously because set pattern and covering pattern techniques are used. On the other hand, there is no facility that shows proportion, and there are two facilities that show rhythm. This phenomenon has occurred because, to increase the space efficiency, plants are planted on the edges and the proportion is ignored. For rhythm, the differences of heights of plants can be expressed as a skyline.
For equipment, repetition and emphasis are used frequently. This is because using same equipment repeatedly is simple. Moreover, the safe fence brings this result. For emphasis, the pavilion and pergola occupy the visual because their sizes. On the other hand, the rhythm cannot be seen in any facility. Building fence rhythmically is a field that needs to be studied. If the principle of modeling is used more to place equipments, it will result the space to be more safe and useful.
Out of ten facilities, eight facilities provided water space, but the depth was shallow and the size was small. For water space, free curved line technique was used rhythmically. Since water is essential for both humans and environment, it is important to provided water spaces with different designs and their own uniqueness.
Lastly, for pavement, contrast and repetition occurred. The hardwoods and flagstone which are the most frequently used materials for pavement, result the contrast. The repetition occurs because of peculiarity of the materials. For pavement, hardwoods and flagstone are being used. To provide more artistic design, various types of material need to be used.
4. The following analysis is the application of the space composition factor in different principle of modeling. In thirteen facilities, repetition is being used the most: 28 times, unity: 25 times, contrast and emphasis: 24 times each, symmetry: 21 times, rhythm: 13 times, balance: 10 times, and proportion 6 times.
Repetition is used the most because it is applied in plant, equipment, and pavement. Unity is used the second most and this is because designers think for overall harmony of plant, equipment, and pavement. In the future, if proportion, balance, and rhythm is used more, the result of design can be more aesthetic and comfortable.
5. The following analysis is the principle of modeling in different building usage. In Gye Seong Girls’ High School, there is a field where students can plant wildflowers and grow vegetables. In Presbyterian College and Theological Seminary-A (PCTS-A), there is a prayer room where the students can use freely. Also there are stages at PCTS-A and Ewha Woman’s University Mokdong Hospital, where the performances take place. Other than thse examples, there was no other special design. Therefore, in the future, designers should come up with design that is specialized for its users and differentiated from other services.
Consequently, all the principle of modeling that is used in roof garden looked artistic, aesthetic and convenient. This study is expected to be used to provide many more places where people and nature meet and exist in one place together.
