This paper aims to understand the intelligent features inherent to the ubiquitous environment, to identify the possibility of public libraries that have an intelligent space system in a ubiquitous environment by applying the intelligent features to public libraries with modern concepts, and to find out characteristics of the intelligent space system by analyzing phenomena occurring in such a process. For achieving this purpose, the paper provides its descriptions through the following organization.
First of all, this paper finds out orientations of public libraries in the ubiquitous age through the analysis of the characters and expectations of the public library in the modern sense. As for the methodology, this paper examines the relationship between society and changes in the information structure in order to learn the meanings of the information society, and then analyzes the requirements of the public library in the modern sense, and the properties of the spaces of the public library.
Second, in order to draw aspatial approach to the public library in the ubiquitous environment, this paper analyzes the features of the ubiquitous environment, and investigates the interface through the body, the technology that enables the user and the digital information to interact through the space in the ubiquitous environment. Through this process, this paper derives the features of the intelligent space system that contains the ubiquitous environment and a user-based approach to it.
Lastly, presenting the methodology that can be applied to the space of the public library with the derive features of the intelligent space, and the user-based approach, this paper presents a picture of the public library in the ubiquitous age.
To put in more detail the contents attained through such a process:
First, it is examined what influence the information structure of modern society has on the social fundamentals through the social roles and historical meanings of information.
Especially, it proves that the hyper-textual structure that is most important in the sense of modern information has the hierarchy-free, scope-free, and structure-free properties, and that such properties show clear differences from the predicative linear structure of classic information.
Second, whereas the space system at the time when the information related to the architectural space system had the form of the predicative sentential structure appeared to have linear aspects resembling the information structure at that time, in the modern space system the characters of the modern information are changing into the form similar to the hyper-textual structure deviant from the power structure through the process where the meanings and structures of the existing information escape from the
hierarchy, scopes, and structures. From these aspects, we learn that the hierarchy-free, scope-free, and structure-free information structure has much influence on the structures of the architectural space. Also, we realize that as the social expectations are changed with the diversity of information environments resulting from the diversification of informational media and the development of network technology, the new features that the modern library ought to have should extend its hitherto roles as a storage of
information to more diverse functions as an informational hub, as a business supporting center, as a collaborator for its community, as a media center, as an educational facility, and as space for leisure and rest.
Third, we can tell from the analysis of the ubiquitous environment that it shows properties of a non-hierarchical structure of information distribution, non-linear time, a hierarchy-free and structure-free relational structure of space. Also, the analysis presents the ways to interact with the digital space through actual access by the user’s body to the physical space as an approach coincided with such properties. This paper presents the interface with the techniques including haptic, multimodal, augmented reality, user access engine as parts ofthe ways, and explores the ways to make the
space approach to the substantiality of computing through the study of distributed object computing as a technique for space computing. To predict the picture of the changed space system in the ubiquitous environment through the process so far, it will be an intelligent space system which can interact with the user and things by objectifying and informationalizing the elements of the physical space. Such an intelligent space system can appear as a distributed space system, as a nomadic space system, and as an extended spatio-temporal structure, and we understand that the creation of surplus spaces due to this enables the extension of the user’s space.
Based on the results attained in thisway, we can present the features of the intelligent space system as the four extensive structures:
1) the informationalization of the physical space,
2) the movable structure of the user’s space,
3) the situation-conscious spacesystem, and
4) the non-linear spatio-temporal structure. Also, as the ways of reflecting
these properties on the public library, this paper presents 1) intelligent spatial elements and intelligent things for the informationalization, 2) the sensitivity-recognitive mobile structure of space using the intelligent elevator and network as a way of the mobile structure of the user’s space, 3) the On-Off structure of space in accordance with the user’s access in order to realize a situation-recognitive structure of space, and the
structure with the mix of the absolute and flexible arrangement structures, 4) amethodology with detailed themes through connective utilization between the physical and digital spaces in order to extend to the non-linear spatio-temporal structure.
Furthermore, with some examples of using the detailed methodology and such properties that the intelligent space system in the ubiquitous environment has, this paper confirms that the user-centered space system through the diversified space system program is possible.
Through the study of the intelligent space system with the public library that has the intelligent space system in the ubiquitous environment as its model, this paper presents a way of informatioalization based on the distributed object computing by establishing the physical structural elements of the architectural spaces as the entities of computing, and we learn that the intelligent space system built up in this methodology can appear
as a space system containing diverse programs enabling an active interrelationship between the user and the things. We expect that such an intelligent space system will be realized soon, and the rate will be enhanced.
