The purpose of this study was to investigate general tendency of mother's marital satisfaction and parenting stress and differences among variables, and how mother's marital satisfaction and parenting stresses effect on development of children’s self-regulation. Also this study attempts to provide basic materials for use of helping mothers in early childhood education field or consultation field.
To achieve this purpose, the research questions are as follows.
1. How is marital satisfaction, parenting stress and children’s self-regulation?
2. What is the effect of mother’s marital satisfaction on children’s self-regulation?
2-1 How is relationship between mother’s marital satisfaction and children’s self-regulation?
2-2 What is the effect of mother’s marital satisfaction on children’s self-regulation?
3. What is the effect of mother’s parenting stress on children’s self-regulation?
3-1 How is the relationship between mother’s parenting stress and children’s self-regulation?
3-2 What is the effect of mother’s parenting stress on children’s self-regulation?
The subject of this study was 131 infants in 5 years old, who are in 8 kindergarten located in Yongin City, Kyeong-gi Province and 131 their mother and teacher respectively. The MSS(Marital Satisfaction Scale) method which is developed by Roach, Fraizer & Bowden(1981), and adapted and modified by Insoo Lee & Youngjoo Yu(1986) is used in order to measure mother’s marital satisfaction, also measure of PSI(Parenting Stress Index) deveolped by Abidin(1990) and adapted by Hyeyoung Seo(1992) is applied to investigate mother’s parenting stress and Scale of Self-regulation which is developed by Okseung Yang(2006) for teacher’s use, is applied to investigate children’s self-regulation.
Materials were analyzed with one way ANOVA, t-test, Scheffe test, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis by using the program, SPSS(Statistical Package for the Social Science) WIN 18.0.
The summary of this study is followed: First, the general tendency of mother's marital satisfaction is above average and there is a meaningful difference in mother's marital satisfaction depending on not their employment, monthly income in the home but only the number of children. The general tendency of mother's parenting stress is average and there is a meaningful difference in mother's parenting stress on not their employment, monthly income in the home but only the number of children. The general tendency of children's self-regulation is comparatively high and cognitive-regulation is higher than emotional-regulation.
Second, There's a meaningful positive relationship between mother's marital satisfaction and every field of children's self-regulation and recognition of marriage, lower factor of marital satisfaction positively affect on children's self-regulation.
Third, There's a meaningful negative relationship between mother's parenting stress and every field of children's self-regulation and parent-child dysfunctional interaction, lower factor of parenting stress negatively affect on children's self-regulation.
Fourth, mother's parenting stress draw greater negative influence on every field of children's self-regulation than mother's marital satisfaction.
In conclusion, it represents that mother's marital satisfaction and parenting stress has a close relationship with children's self-regulation. And the mother's parenting stress appears to affect on children's self-regulation more than the mother's marital satisfaction. Therefore, it is necessary to develop and supply the program which can raise a mother's marital satisfaction and properly control mother's parenting stress.
