The purpose of this article is historically to analyse Rev. Dukyoung Bae's religious education and to evaluate his contribution for early Korean Churches in 1930s. As the first director of Sunday School Board of the United Korean Methodist Church, he had achieved a lot of educational tasks for the Korean Methodist Church and the whole Korean churches as well. In details, the researcher tries to analyse Rev. Bae's religious education according to the seven educational categories: educational purpose/objectives, teacher, learner, curriculum, educational environment, educational evaluation, and liturgy. The results of this article are three below.
Frist, Rev. Bae established the Korean-style Sunday School which was similar to Korean daily public school system at that time. In other words, he completely changed the Sunday School system, which was imported by American missionaries, into the modern general-style Sunday School system in Korea. Second, he emphasized "the social science approach" for the Sunday School on the basis of the principle of efficiency and effectiveness to achieve the educational objectives. Especially, he classified the concrete objectives for educational goal and developed the graded curriculum in terms of developmental psychology theory for the United Korean Methodist Church for the first time. Finally, Rev. Bae suggested us the importance of the balance between the education of knowledge and education of heart as well as the harmony between professionality and spirituality of Christian teachers. It means that his religious education was toward "a spiritual approach for wholeness." In conclusion, Rev. Bae should be called by a name of "a forerunner of the modern Korean religious education."
