귀환이민 유형화에 따른 재미 한인이민자의 귀환동기 연구 = A Case Study of Return Motives for Korean-American Migrants Based on the Typology of Return Migration

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 한국으로 귀환한 재미한인이민자 4명을 대상으로 그들의 귀환동기를파악하고자 했다. A의 사례는 귀환의 ‘성공’과 ‘실패’를 일방적으로 경제적 요인을중심으로 분류하는 것은 더 이상 적절하지 않다는 것을 드러냈다. A 가족에게 한국으로의 귀환은 이주 주기의 종결이 아니라, 또 다른 시작에 불과했다. 귀환이민‘이후’가 귀환이민 ‘이전’이 되는 경우는 C에게서도 드러났다. 본 연구는 Cerase 의 귀환이민 유형 분류에 따라, ‘실패의 귀환’관점에서 B의 사례를 분석했다. B의귀환은 수용사회에서 이민자가 느끼는 소속감의 문제와 함께 고려되어야 귀환동기에 접근할 수 있음을 보여준다. B의 귀환이 이민 ‘실패’의 결과라면, 그 실패는 경제적 실패가 아니라, 사회통합의 ‘실패’임을 강조하고자 했다. 마지막으로 Dienel 의 유형론을 빌려 귀환이민의 ‘정서적 동기’에 주목해 보았다. 특히 D와 C의 사례를 통해 귀환이민의 동기로서 정서적 요인이 이민자의 고령화와 맞물려, 그 의미가 더욱 중요해지고 있음을 확인했다.

This study aims to understand the motives of 4 Korean returnees from U.S.A.
The case of A reveals that it does not any more appropriate to divide the “success” and “failure” of return migration solely by the economic motives.
For family A, the return migration to Korea was not the end of migration cycle, but an another start. The motivation for B’s return can be accessible, only when the problem of inclusion or integration of emigrant in the host society should be considered. If B’s return would be the result of emigration “failure,” it is not an economic failure, but a “failure” to be integrated into the society. Lastly, based on Dienel’s typology theory, this study pays attention to “emotional motives” of return migration. Especially in the case of D and C, the emotional factor as return motivation proves to become more significant, along with aging. These cases clearly demonstrated the inter-connectedness of aging and return migration.
