In this paper, the developments of prime movers, steam and internal combustion engine in the period of Age of Machines, especially between 1750~1900 are studied and summarized. From the point of historical view, the formation of mechanical engineering during this period is also parallel analysed. In accordance with the industrial needs, the new concept of Engineer-Scientist was established as an engineering pedagogy for the process of designing complex machines using mathematical, science-based methods at the engineering schools started in France, which broke with Craftsman-Engineer system through the tradition of Apprenticeship in England and influenced generations of engineers for the innovation into the 20th century.
