This research investigates the establishment of and the teaching methods used in Seoksil Seowon. As everybody knows, Seoksil Seowon is the seowon erected in 1656 to commemorate fidelity, studies and virtues of civil servants Kim Sang-yong and Kim Sang-heon (posthumously named Mun Chung-gong and Mun Jeong-gong) who committed suicide in Ganghwado Island during the Manchu war of 1636. Since the very establishment, Seoksil Seowon was the typical seowon of the Old Learning faction Geun-gi Noron. While Kim Chang-hyeop and Kim Chang-heup took the lead over the education in Seoksil Seowon since the middle of the 17th century till the beginning of the 18th century, Kim Won-haeng was studying in the seowon in the middle of the 18th century. This made Seoksil Seowon an attractive place for studying and created its reputation to have an ideological environment for Nakron School from the faction of Old Learning (Noron).
