소리미술의 공간과 장소성에 대한 고찰 = 막스 뉴하우스와 자넷 카디프 작업을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 공간과의 상호작용을 기반으로 하는 소리미술이 장소성을 어떻게 구현해 나가는지를 살펴보기 위해 1960년대 후반부터 활동한 대표적인 1세대 소리미술가 막스 뉴하우스(Max Neuhaus, 1939-2009)와 동시대 작가인 자넷 카디프(Janet Cardiff, 1957-)의 대표적인 작업들을 공간과 장소성을 중심으로 다루고 있다. 뉴하우스는 대표적인 1세대 소리미술가로 1960년대 후반부터 주로 공공장소에서의 소리설치와 퍼포먼스를 통해 소리와 공간과의 상호적 관계를 장소라는 주제와 함께 개진했다. 뉴하우스는 소리를 통해서 장소를 경험하는 방식을 제시하면서 소리미술의 장소성을 지속적으로 탐구해왔지만 그의 작업들은 미술사에서 상대적으로 주목받지 못하였고, 장소특정적 미술의 범주 안에서도 논의되지 않았다. 뉴하우스의 주요 작업들과 함께 소리를 주된 매체로 활용하는 동시대 작가인 카디프의 작업을 살펴보면서 소리미술의 장소성에 대해 다양한 형태와 특징들을 고찰하면서 미술사 안에서 그 계보를 그려보고자 했다.
뉴하우스는 장소의 소리와 공간과의 상호작용으로 만들어지는 상황을 관람자에게 제시하기 위해 소리풍경에 집중하며 걷는 퍼포먼스를 진행했다. 또한 공공장소에서 미세한 소음을 발생시켜 장소를 재구성하는 방식을 보여주었다. 이와 달리 카디프는 영화적 시나리오를 통해 연출된 가상공간을 청각적으로 구현함으로써 참여자들에게 실제 장소와 가상공간을 넘나드는 복합적인 시공간을 경험하게 했다. 카디프의 작업은 단순히 장소를 청각으로 지각하는 것이 아니라 소리를 통해 장소를 재구현하고 구축된 공간을 사유할 수 있는 경험을 야기했다. 이로 인해 소리미술은 공간과의 상호적 관계를 수반하면서 실제장소뿐 아니라 다양한 층위의 가상공간을 구축하여 장소를 경험하는 새로운 방식을 만들 수 있다는 점을 밝히고자한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study examines the aspect of ‘site-specificity’ in Sound Art, which is built upon its relationship to the space, by observing the works of Max Neuhaus, a first-generation sound artist of the late 1960s, and Janet Cardiff, a contemporary sound artist.
Neuhaus is one of the pioneering sound artists, who explored the sound within the scope of site-specific artworks that have emerged in the late 1960s. He had presented a new way of representing the space with sounds. However, his works have never been discussed in terms of site-specific perspective despite of its significance. Therefore, this study aims to examine how sound was explored as a medium in relation to the space by observing the works of Neuhaus, and how the ‘Site-specificity’ in Sound Art has been elaborated and diversified by looking in to the works of Cardiff.
Studies on Sound Art is distinguished from the existing discourse of site-specific art, which falls within the realm of the visual art. It is necessary to observe the relationship between sound and the space, and consider ‘listening’ as a way of appreciation. For instance, Neuhaus’ performance piece makes the audience to focus on the ‘Soundscape’ while walking, in order to present a situation created by the interplay between the sound of the place and the space. Furthermore, he tries to reconstruct the place by creating a deliberate noise in public spaces.
On the other hand, Cardiff works out a cinematic scenario and creates a virtual space through sounds, making participants to experience the complexity of time and space by presenting both real and virtual spaces at once. Eventually, Cardiff’s work shows a way to reconstruct the space through sounds, making audiences to contemplate the space that has been recreated.
Overall, by exploring the works of Neuhaus and Cardiff, this study defines the characteristic and lineage of Site-specificity in Sound Art and its relationship to the space and the place.
