      Machine cell formation is critical in cellular manufacturing. Cellular manufacturing is an application of group technology in which dissimilar machines are aggregated into cells, each of which is dedicated to the production of a part family or limited group of families. The cell formation determines to a great degree the performance of the cell. A number of quantitative techniques have been developed to deal with the machine cell formation problem. Recently, a grouping genetic algorithm that is designed to solve the cell formation problem was introduced and its effectiveness was proved. In this paper, we attempt to improve the grouping genetic algorithm through proposing a new replacement method in crossover. Computational experiments on various test problems are performed to evaluate the performance of the proposed grouping genetic algorithm against the several well-known solutions as well as the original grouping genetic algorithm, with respect to the measurement of grouping efficacy.
