여가제약 중재전략에 관한 연구 = The Study of Leisure Constraints Negotiation Strategies

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of using selective optimization and compensation(SOC) strategies in leisure and perceived constraints on level of change in participation in social leisure activity domain in a sample of older adults. Subjects were 214 older adults(69 males, 145 females), 65 years of age and older, who participated in senior welfare centers located in S city. In this study, the three constraint factors were defined as 'intrapersonal', 'interpersonal', and 'structural'. The results of this study provided evidence that older adults change their levels of participation due to constraints. Among our sample, only structural-related constraints were found to influence level of participation, thus indicating that inconvenient facilities/services and accessibility, lack of financial and time constraints significantly reduce level of participation as one ages. Adding the life-span perspective offered by the SOC theory, the study found statistically positive results that would support the usefulness of using SOC strategies to negotiate constraints. Looking at the effects of SOC strategies to predict change in social leisure behavior, the results indicated that optimization was a successful strategy in negotiating constraints. Optimization is a goal-oriented strategy, and those who are high in the ability to optimize are able to persevere to achieve the goals they set. The findings lend some support to earlier theorizing that perceptions of constraints are actually motivating and perceptions of structural constraints are reduced when one has good compensation skills.
