아우구스또 보알(Augusto Boal)의 ‘조커 시스템(Joker System)’ 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 ‘조커 시스템’과 ‘관객-배우(spect-actor)’로 대표되는 아우구스또 보알의 배우 개념을 고찰한 다. 관객과 배우의 경계가 모호해지는, 혹은 참여로서의 관객의 역할을 적극 이용하는 공연들이 많이 등장하고 있는 오늘날의 연극적 상황에 있어서 보알의 배우 개념에 대한 재고는 연극과 배우 예술 전반 에 걸쳐 의미 있는 사고의 틀을 제공할 수 있을 것이다. 보알은 그의 후기 저서에서도 ‘창의적 참여는 우리 세계의 다양한 가능성들을 상상하는 인간 능력을 증가시키고, 더 나아가 이러한 독려는 그것을 하 는 욕망을 자극시킨다.’고 주장하며 ‘관객참여’에 대한 우위를 양보하지 않았다. 즉, 관객들이 적극적으로 예술 생산의 전과정에 참여하는 것을 예술의 가장 중요한 지점으로 계속해서 상정하고 있는 것이다. 그렇기 때문에 그의 조커시스템과 관객-배우 개념은 관객 참여 연극뿐만 아니라 공연예술 전반에 걸쳐 배우가 누구이고 어떤 역할을 하는가에 대한 문제에 응답할 수 있는 실마리를 제공할 것이다. 1장에서는 먼저 아우구스또 보알의 연극론 일반에 대한 역사적 고찰을 해 나갈 것이다. 시기별로 다르게 나타나는 연극론을 상세히 고찰하고 조커시스템과 관객-배우의 출현의 배경을 살펴본다. 2장에서는 본격적으로 조커시스템을 분석한다. 조커의 개념과 역할, 그 미학적 의의를 따져보고 전통적 연극에서의 배우 개념 과 비교해 본다. 또한 조커 시스템의 한계를 언급한 논의들도 살펴본다. 마지막으로 3장에서는 관객-배 우의 역할과 의의를 살펴보고 과연 이들을 ‘배우’라는 개념의 테두리 안에 넣을 수 있는 것인가에 대해 생각해 보고자다. 결국 이 논문은 아우구스또 보알의 배우 개념 고찰을 통해 동시대 배우의 개념과 역할 에 관한 자리매김을 시도하는데 목적이 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In this thesis, I examine Brazilian theatre practitioner, Augusto Boal’s ‘Theatre of the Oppressed’. For many years, theatre practitioners and others the world over used Theatre of the Oppressed as a tool for social change. His project and method are a umbrella term for a community of techniques as ‘rehearsal for the revolution’. In his theatre work, the oppressed practice techniques to overcome their oppression and oppressors in their lives. Especially, I focus on two major concepts, ‘Jocker System’ and ‘Spect-Actor’. Using ideas from both concepts, I propose the identity and role of the actor in contemporary theatre. First of all, I analyse his ‘Jocker System’, in which all the actors play all the characters. Boal insisted that in jocker system, we eliminate the actor’s mediation in the presentation of character to spectator, in which all styles are permitted. Then, I consider the spect-actor’s concept, the goal of his theatre. This concept evolved organically from simultaneous dramaturgy. Although an limitation of his theory, his project and concept of the actor can provide some identification to the contemporary actors and theatre practitioners.
