Chaetoceros calcitrans, Cyclotella nana 및 Monochrysis lutheri 의 3種에 關한 培洋實驗을 1968年 3月 부터 10月 까지 사이에 施行 했는데 結果는 다음과 같다.
1). Growth cycle 이 가장 빠른 것은 Chaetoceros calcitrans이고, 다음이 Cyclotella nana 이며 가장 늦은 것이 Monochrysis lutheri 였는데 먹이로서 使用하는 適期는 Chaetoceros calcitrans 는 3日, Cyclotella nana는 10日, Monochrysis lutheri 는 12日이였다.
2). 培養의 生長으로서는 Cyclotella nana 가 먹이生物로서 알맞고 培養期間에선
Chaetoceros calcitrans가 알맞다고 할 수 있다.
3). Flask 培養은 Aeration 培養의 生長에 比해 顯著히 적어서 Mass culture 用 먹이倍養時엔 Aeration 培養이 效果的이라는 것을 알 수 있다.
4). Cell number dp eogks packed cell volume 의 比는 Chaetoceros calcitrans 가 가장크고 다음이 Cyclotella nana 이며 가장 작은 것이 Monochrysis lutheri이다.

Three species of planktonic algae, Chaetoceros calcitrans, Cyclotella nana and Monochrysis lutheri, have been grown in bacteria-free culture under controlled condituons and their growth have been measured by means of cell counts.
Comparing the growth cycles of these algae, Chaetoceros calcitrans was the shortest of the three and followed by Cyclotella nana and Monochrysis lutheri. These algae could be used as suitable foods for bivalve larvae after a certain days of cultivation, i.e., three days for Chaetoceros calcitrans, 10 days for Cyclotella nana and 12 for Monochrysis lutheri. Cyclotella nana could be the most suitable food for rearing of bivalve mollusks since the density of the cells increases rapidly as compared to that of the others. The period of growth is very short in the culture of Chaetoceros calcitrans, reaching death phase in four days after inoculation. Thus, as far as the period of growth is concerned,
this diatom also can be used as a suitable food for bivalve larvae.
Growth was considerably better in aerated cultures than in stagnant ones, indicating that aeration will be more effective in making mass-culture of the algal food.
As regards ther atio of packed cell volume to number of cells in cultures, the largest ratio is found in Chaetoceros calcitrans which is followed by Cyclotella nana and Monochrysis lutheri.
