This study aims to examine the differentiated branding structures of K-pop idol groups across generations by analyzing narratives represented in idol documentaries through the lens of character archetypes. Drawing on Christopher Vogler’s theory of the Hero’s Journey and character archetypes, this study adopts a qualitative case analysis of official documentaries featuring third- and fourth-generation K-pop girl groups. In particular, this study analyzes how character archetypes—such as the hero, mentor, shadow, and ally—are configured within the documentaries, while also examining variations in narrative structures and the resulting differences in branding strategies. The findings are as follows. First, documentaries of third-generation idol groups construct a branding strategy centered on a “growth-oriented heroes” narrative, emphasizing hardship during the trainee period and collective growth, thereby fostering a sense of communal bonding and humanized intimacy among members. Second, documentaries of fourth-generation idol groups employ narratives of “completed heroes” who demonstrate high levels of professionalism and achievement from the outset, or heroes who reveal internal struggles and self-reflection, thus establishing branding strategies based on differentiated expertise and individualized intimacy. By conceptualizing idol documentaries not merely as records but as narrative mechanisms for constructing human brands, this study contributes to expanding K-pop branding research into the domain of narrative and character archetype analysis.
