This study examines the adaptation of Nakajima Miyuki’s songs in Hong Kong popular music from 1978 to 1997 from the perspective of cultural translation. Focusing on Cantonese adaptations of songs written and composed by Nakajima Miyuki, it analyzes how meanings and emotional structures were reorganized in the process of cross-cultural transmission. Because direct comparison of melody and arrangement is often limited, the study centers on three dimensions: lyrics, rhythm, and singer image. Representative cases from two periods, 1978 to 1993 and 1994 to 1997, were selected to identify stage-specific translation patterns.
The findings reveal clear differences between the two periods. From 1978 to 1993, adaptations mainly showed tendencies toward publicization, positivization, and mainstreamization. Private and introspective emotions in the Japanese originals were transformed into more explicit narratives of encouragement, companionship, and forward movement. Rhythmic changes remained relatively small, while mainstream singers reinforced the public persuasiveness of the adapted songs. From 1994 to 1997, adaptation strategies became more differentiated. Abstract and restrained emotions were transformed into more direct experiences of friendship, heartbreak, desire, fantasy, and being loved. Rhythm became functionally differentiated, and singer image played a more specialized role in shaping reception. The study concludes that these adaptations constituted a staged practice of cultural translation rather than a simple repetition of melody.
