자연과 인간의 중간지대로서의 인류세 담론 고찰 = The Study of Anthropocene Discourse as A Middle Ground between Nature and Human in Charles Siebert’s Wickerby: An Urban Pastoral

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목표는 기후변화에 대한 인문분야의 가능한 역할을 탐색하는 것이다. 인문분야 고유의 역할뿐 아니라 자연과학분야와의 협업이 요구되는 시점에서 이 두 분야를 연구한 프랑스의 학자 바슐라르의 이론은 매우 유용하다. 그는 과학철학을 통해 자연과학의 인식론적 장애를 지적하였으며, 인문분야의 비 인과적 시적 이미지를 탐색하였다. 그의 연구들은 자연과학계의 인류세 개념을 환경담론인 인류세 담론으로 활용할 기본토대를 제공한다. 만약 인류세 개념을 환경담론으로 활용한다면, 그것은 단지 지구에 대한 인간의 영향력을 의미하기 보다는 기존의 타자적 존재였던 지구에 대한 애착을 기본으로 인류의 새로운 비전을 성취하기 위해 과학기술을 활용한 인간의 개입을 함의할 수 있다. 인류세 담론의 함의는 생태중심주의의 의도치 않는 인간혐오현상을 극복할 수 있고 현재의 기후변화문제에 가능한 대안을 제시할 수 있다. 시버트의 작품, 『위커비』는 지구환경에 대한 인간의 양면성을 지적하며 자신의 연인 벡스, 동물원의 코뿔소, 루디, 그리고 시골의 오두막집, 위커비에 대한 애착으로 자연환경에 대한 인간의 양면성을 포용하는 예시를 제시한다. 그는 야생자연을 상징하는 위커비를 구하기 위해 능동적으로 인류의 능력, 자연과학과 기술, 그리고 인간문명을 사용할 것을 시도한다. 비록 그의 시도가 작품 속에서 실현되지 않았지만, 현재의 인류세 담론처럼 새로운 자연관을 제시하며 인류의 환경적 자각을 강화시킨다. 그의 작품 속 예시를 통해, 본 연구는 인류세 담론에서 인문분야는 새로운 방향성을 탐구할 뿐 아니라 자연과학계와의 가능한 관계를 통해 일반대중에게 실현가능하고 현실적인 대안을 제시하는 역할을 수행할 수 있다고 주장한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to explore possible roles of humanities for contemporary global environment problems, Climate change. The theories of French scholar, Gaston Bachelard who studied both natural science and humanities will be useful for reference. He found epistemological obstacles for natural sciences exploring the field with the philosophy of science, and non-causality of poetic imagination in humanities. His studies can give this study a basis of Anthropocene discourse. If the Anthropocene concept newly suggested by the natural sciences is applied to the environmental discourse, its meaning can be extended e.g. humans can make relations with the natural sciences and technology in order to achieve our new ecological vision based on the attachment to others, other creatures, other humans, and the earth. This new meaning of the Anthropocene can overcome ecocentric perspective’s unintended misanthropy and suggest further possible alternatives for contemporary global environment problems. Charles Siebert"s Wickerby shows human’s ambivalence for our surroundings, and examples to embrace both aspects with attachments for his spouse, Bex, his favorite animal in the zoo, Rudy, and country-side cabin, Wickerby, expanding them into the nature. He would actively try to use our human ability, natural sciences or technology, and human civilization. Although his attempts are not realized yet in his work, this work shows new possible perspectives and enhances our environmental consciousness to the public like the Anthropocene discourse. Through examples of his work, this study can not only explore new directions in humanities for the environment, but suggest feasible and realistic alternatives to the public providing new potential relations with the natural sciences.
