During the broadcasting of the New Journey to the West series, which was produced by PD (program director) Na Young-Seok,the founder of the 'traveling entertainment' genre on which this study focuses, various genres of spin-off entertainment content were derived, including Mapohipster, MINO's Pilot, How Long Will You Make Me Dance with My Shoulders, Look at My Shoulder, It's Dislocated, Kang's Kitchen, Samseoksiki-Three Meals in Iceland and Lee’s Kitchen Alone. This study analyzes the communication process and meaning of the spin-off contents of New Journey to the West from the perspective of 'ritual communication' as proposed by James W. Carey. Unlike the universally recognized view that ‘communication is the transmission and reception of messages,’ ritual communicationtakes a cultural perspective that ‘communication creates common beliefs,’ which has led to the re-conceptualization and definition of communication in fields such as psychology, sociology, and theology. Starting from the perspective of 'ritual communication', this paper attempts to focus on the communication between the spin-off content of New Journey to the West and the viewers and analyzes the process by which Na Young-Seok created a series of spin-offs through close communication with the viewers, centered on New Journey to the West. The conclusion of the study is that a successful ritual communication in this case provided cultural energy and an environment for spinoff contents to be created and prosper.
