스피노자의『윤리학』에서 유한한 개체의 영원성 = The Eternity of Finite Individuals in Spinoza’s Ethics

This article elucidates the concept of eternity and its philosophical implications in Spinoza's Ethics. According to the definition of eternity presented in Part I of Ethics, eternity implies necessary existence. It can be said that not only God but also finite individuals exist in this sense. The existence can be understood in terms of duration, and also can be understood in non-temporal sense. In this non-temporal aspect, existence is logically implied in the essence of God. Therefore, in an aspect eternity can be attributed to finite individuals. In the fifth part of Ethics, Spinoza starts from this ontological conception of eternity and moves on to the description of consciousness of such eternity. This plan is closely related to Spinoza's ethical project. Intellectual awareness to our eternity is to actively realize our singular essence. In Spinoza’s Ethics salvation is not to transcend individuality. It is an activity based on individuality because it is to recognize itself as a part of God by recognizing the essential and non-temporal aspect of individuality which cannot be reduced to universals.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 스피노자의 『윤리학』에 나타난 영원성 개념과 그것의 철학적 함축에 대해서 논하고자 한다. 『윤리학』 1부의 영원성에 대한 정의에 따르면, 영원성은 필연적 실존을 뜻한다. 신만이 아니라 유한한 개체도 이러한 의미에서 실존한다고 일컬어질 수 있다. 실존은 두 가지 의미를 갖는데, 그것은 지속의 측면에서 이해될 수도 있고, 비시간적 측면에서도 이해될 수 있다. 후자의 실존은 신의 본질에 논리적으로 함축된다. 이러한 의미에서 개체도 영원하다고 말해질 수 있다. 『윤리학』 5부는 이러한 존재론적 영원성 개념에서 출발하지만 그러한 영원성에 대한 인식까지 다루고 있다. 이러한 구도는 스피노자의 윤리적 기획과 연관이 있다. 자신의 영원성에 인식은 우리의 개별 본질을 능동적으로 실현하는 것이기 때문이다. 스피노자의 철학에서 구원은 개체성의 초월이 아니라, 개체성에 기초한다. 현자는 지속 속에서 영원한 자기를 인식함으로써 스스로가 신의 한 부분임을 적합하게 의식하고, 그러한 자기에 대한 만족을 획득한다.
