Recently, as the incidence of pre-term is increasing, interest in the risk factors has increased.
The purpose of this study was to examine the long-term trend of the pre-term birth rate in Korea and to evaluate the correlation between pre-term birth rate and risk factors (mean maternalage, twin birth rate). This study used the birth rate data of the Statistics Korea from 1995 to 2017 to calculate annual pre-term birth rate, proportion of maternal age over 35, twin birth rate, and infant mortality rate. The pre-term birth rate was continuously increasing for 23 years(25.6 in1995→76.1 in 2017). The mean maternal age (r=0.990, p<0.0001) and twin birth rate (r=0.985, p<0.0001) showed positive correlation with the pre-term birth rate. There is a need for efforts to improve pre-term birth survival or prevent premature infant through pre-natal management of risk factor and high-risk groups (maternal age over 35 or twin birth).
