This study looked into the theoretical background of integrated education analysis, structure and procedure of theme-centered teaching model, and guidance cases of combined art course and korean course through book-art. Theme-centered integrated study is for improvement of integrated thinking power. Class using this study improved the accomplishment of the work when it is adapted to art. It is also proven to be effective for juvenile to express their information of ideas from education who is not used to abstract thinking built by language.
Integration methods within art course and between courses are possible through various accesses, especially in book-art integrated education. It develops the purpose of the art -aesthetics, creativity, formation- and improves the educational effects on study with other courses. Art course is a flexible course which has many advantages for integration. Through integration it can stimulate student's aesthetic sensibility, contribute to the development of the whole man, and maximize educational efficiency.
The effects of theme-center integrated education on 'Combined Teaching Guideline of Art Course and Korean Course through Book-art' by Kim sun-a(2008) are as follows :
First, contribution to an overall thinking. To make a book, integrated activities such as drawing, crafting, designing, writing, etc. are required. Students develop the ability to manage information effectively on a process of presenting their thoughts related to theme and expressing them on writing and drawing.
Second, confidence in expression. Sometimes students hesitate to express their thoughts or feeling on the paper because of pressure under drawing paper. However, when it comes to a book-art, the pressure is lessened and students freely express their writing and drawing on one picture with confidence.
Third, synergy effect on both courses. Writing activity of korean course and expression activity of art course improves the ability to express oneself, conceptual ability, good eye for aesthetic and critical thinking in complementary relation.
Fourth, formation of positive concept of art. Most students are fond of art class, but sometimes they seem to feel burden to coloring or to have hard time expressing their thoughts as they wish. However, when it comes to a work of integrated book-art, students take leading role to produce their work, complete a piece of work with their own character inside. Students participate an art activity joyfully with growing self-confidence on their complete work.
Fifth, opportunity to share each other's thoughts. Students get a chance to compare their work with others, listen to friend's opinion and accept it in positive way while appreciating everyone's work in groups.
In addition to these positive conclusions, there are some proposals on issues through case study and following research.
First, research by Kim sun-a(2008) is targeted on 28 students which makes it hard to prove its effectiveness. Therefore, it is require to practice the study on more than 100 students so that it could verify the value of book-art as a part of an art.
Second, there are many related publication of making plane book-art, but study of making cubic book-art with various materials is not enough. There are needs to develop how to make cubic book-art with easily accessible materials.
Third, formulate study for a book-art to be a part of an art, not as a medium of art education is required. A study of necessity and context on book-art has to be made through cases of England, which adopts book-art as education course, and other countries.
Theme-centered integrated education through book-art corresponds with de-genre modern art trend, development stage of elementary, middle school students, and goal of the whole man education. Moreover, the book-art activity which is making a complete book develops student's confidence, interest, concentration to help definitive area and it is the most proper medium to express integrated guidance of art course and korean course. Therefore, it is necessary to continue further research on methods of integration with various courses, integrated study methods that is suitable for student's level, and various materials and ways of expression in art course.
