The purpose of this article is to examine the heterogeneity of Kaohsiung City, a gateway city in southern Taiwan, in terms of its history and culture. Through this analysis, we aim to explore the diverse ethnic relations and historical trajectories of Kaohsiung. Due to its original diverse cultures, Kaohsiung has experienced conflicts and tensions in terms of population, ethnic groups, languages, immigration, debates on unification and independence, and identity. Notably, when observing the history and culture of Kaohsiung, a prominent aspect is the simultaneous occurrence of immigration and colonization on the original lands of the indigenous people, particularly during the Japanese colonial period when Taiwan came under imperial rule.
Kaohsiung has transformed into a society where various cultures coexist, characterized by different ethnic groups and imperialistic colonial governance across different eras. For instance, Kaohsiung's culture encompasses the unique cultures of Minnan, Hakka, indigenous people, and foreign residents, along with the influx of Chinese spouses due to cross-strait exchanges since the late 1980s, labor immigrants from Southeast Asia, and marriage immigrants, resulting in an even more diverse and multi-ethnic society. Currently, Kaohsiung continues to carry the cultural context of a multi-ethnic society.
