The purpose of this study was to analyse the scope and types of sub-headwords in Korean dictionaries. We define sub-headwords as headwords which refer to linguistic units including the main headword, in addition to the main entry. There are various units of sub-headwords from a linguistic point of view. The choice of the types of sub-headwords depends on the purpose of dictionaries, their users and the standpoint of lexicographers.
Most of all, the scope and types of sub-headwords are related to the dictionary structure, macrostructure and microstructure. The linguistic types of sub-headword are multi-lexical units including proverbs, idioms, collocations, patterns and so on, in most Korean monolingual dictionaries.
In particular, we reveal that the proportion between main headword and sub-headword of Korean dictionaries is very different according to the type of dictionary.
