The purpose of the study was to explore experiences of interdisciplinary research in higher educational institutions in Korea. The research question of this study was What are the characteristics of experiences of interdisciplinary research in Korea? To answer the research question, a qualitative approach was employed in the study. Thirty one faculty members and researchers who held a doctoral degree participated in the study as informants. Interview recording files, transcriptions from the interviews, and field notes were secured as major data. What found in this study were as follows: First, participants conceptualized an interdisciplinary research as a multidisciplinary research. Second, the motivation of conducting an interdisciplinary research was deeply rooted in researchers` individual and social motivation. Third, communication was one of the most important elements that made an interdisciplinary research successful. Fourth, the key factors that made an interdisciplinary research successful or not successful were the personal relationship and the division of labor among researchers. Fifth, the cultural climate of Korean confucianism heavily influenced the process of an interdisciplinary research among Korean scholars.
