Color is an important element on which 60% of our sight depends and we perceive every object in the environment through colors. Utilized not only as one element of design but as a therapy in the field of medical, colors has diverse roles. Thus, it is very important to understand the various usage of colors in life and to learn more about it. Moreover, in the era of visual culture, it is essential to educate the functions in the colors.
However, these days, color education has neglected in art education. Despite the curriculum of educational activitied needs to be based in students, the study of color still proposed in one-sided, theory-translating way, and the range of color is confined to color wheel or the practical use of medium to color paint or color paper. As the learners’ ability should be improved as the learners approach to higher grade, it is revealed that the learners lose their confidence in the color expression and even lose interest in their art expression.
The color education should be implemented more systematically with experiencing abundant color and activity utilizing diverse colors and media. The result of overviewing existed researches about color education reveals that most of the subjects of the researches were elementary students and researches about using multilateral media have rarely been done.
Therefore, this study is aim to develop the color education which utilizes multilateral media targeting 3rd graders in middle school and find out its effect on students’ learning motivation and accomplishment on study.
The media, here, perform as an important element not only in the field of art expression but in the pedagogical approaches. This study also searches the meaning of utilization of multilateral media through theoretical contemplation. This study looks at overall school curriculum and the analysis of color area in the textbook and designs teaching and learning program based on that. The subjects of this research were two classes of 3rd graders in ‘B Girls’ Middle School’ located in Pusan, which proved its homogeneity. 52 students participated in the study and were divided in two groups, 26 students each: an experimental group and a control group. The color education with the multilateral media are applied in the experimental group, and a color education with the usual media used in the textbook was implemented in the other control group. The study of the color education by experiment with two groups was conducted from September to October in 2016 during three weeks, 6 times altogether.
The compare of learning motivation and academic achievement before the experiment in each group was verified with the pretest and posttest. The questionnaire for learning motivation was reconstructed from Kim So Hyun’s (2015) and the questionnaire for academic achievement reconstructed from teachers’ guidebook. These are verified by in-service teachers and some experts in the field of art education. The SPSS was analyzed with ver. 21.0 for statistic package program after the statistical analysis and the conclusion was complemented with simultaneous evaluation of product after the classes.
The analysis results of this study are as follows:
First, the color classes with utilizing multilateral media for 3rd graders in middle schools are effective on the improvement of learning motivation. In this study, the grades of the experimental group on learning motivation show statistically meaningful changes and high rate of increase compared to the controlled group.
Second, it is found that color classes with utilizing multilateral media for 3rd graders in middle schools are effective on the improvement of academic achievement. In this study, the grades of the experimental group on academic achievement shows statistically meaningful changes and the controlled group demonstrates meaningless changes.
Third, according to the evaluation of practical skill evaluation and self-evaluation, the experimental group demonstrate high evaluations in color expressions, completeness of the products and satisfaction level.
This study is meaningful to improves the learners’ motivation and lead positive results in the academic achievement. Further studies on multilateral media in color education will to bring out learner’s interest and concern and give some positive effectiveness on learners’ motivation and the academic achievement.
