The purpose of this study is identified to be the soteriological features by that shown in John's theological implications of the law. For a discussion of the law traditionally has been made actively a research of Paul. While the law in John is far not been the subject of a interesring research. But also Law in John is at the center of the debate between Jews and Christians. Jews present a cause that Jesus not be a savior through Law but John’s author present a reason that Jesus is a savior. By this debate, Law has a important role that clarify Johannine community in Gospel.
This thesis researched that devide a christological interests and a ecclesiological. Law in John is understanded the view of christology, Jesus is introduced to Law(Jn 1:45). Thus known that Jesus is Christ through Law. But Law is a cause that a unfaith of Jews(Jn 7:41-42; 12:34). Cause of both side of Law, John’s author contrast Jesus Christ with Moses Law to a revelational dimension(Jn 1:17). Jesus is God of the only begotten in Father, he is well known God and support a perfect revelation to human(Jn 1:18). On contrary, Moses Law is Only an indirect revelation. Also, Jesus is only the way, truth, life as one who is above a limit of Law(Jn 10:18, 30; 14:6). A role of Law is only a guide who is Jesus.
Law is understanded by the view of ecclesiology. Johannine community present by base of a legitimation of Law for a persecution(Jn 15:25). And they are identified as a divine existence, they insist that are a eternal community and glorify community through a basis of Law(Jn 10:34). a commandment that love one another is interested as a new commandment through relationship with Jesus.
This awareness of Law is different with Paul letter that contrast a gospel with a works of Law and Synoptic gospel theology that argued with a ethical Law. The peculiarity of John’s law is due to a context of Johannine community who is expel from Judaism.
John’s author suggest a hope to community who expelled from the synagogue, belong to a social deprivation. Through Law, it is known that Jesus is Christ, themselves reality that persecuted, are a proof which they are not belong to world but are a divine existence. Also who keep Law of Judaism are not a children of God but who keep a new commendment of Jesus are a true children who being as a divine existence.
Like this, through Law, John’s author recommend that stay in Jesus who is only Life to community members who discord for a persecution. At the same time contradict efficiently toward a opponents. Thus I concluded that Law in John is exegetic heartly Christ, defense and secure a identity of Johannine community.
