명태의 이명(異名) 고찰 = A Review of Pollack’s Different Names

국문 초록 (Abstract)

물고기는 인간과의 관계가 매우 밀접하고 한국어에는 물고기 이름에 대한 단어가 예상보다 많이 존재한다. 많은 단어가 존재한다는 것은 해당 범주 구성원이 많이 존재하여 각 대상을 표현하는 단어가 더욱 상세한 변별적 의미를 나타내는 것으로 해석할 수 있다. 그래서 물고기 이름의 연구는 사람의 인지 양상을 밝히는데 충분한 자료를 제공할 수 있다. 이에 본고에서는 어류의 하나인 명태(明太)의 명칭에 주목하여 고대부터 현재까지 우리나라에서 명태(明太)를 어떻게 명명하고 있고, 그 명칭의 어원과 유래는 어디에서 왔으며, ‘명태(明太)’라는 물고기 이름이 어떠한 경로를 통해 해외로 전파되었는지, 또 명태(明太)의 다양한 명칭의 종류와 유형이 무엇인지 등에 대한 고찰을 통해 한·중·일 삼국의 명태(明太)에 대한 인식을 살펴보았다. 명태(明太)의 기원은 첫째, 명천에 사는 어부의 성씨에서 얻어진 이름으로 산지인 명천(明川)의 ‘명(明)’자와 어획한 어주의 성인 ‘태(太)’자를 따서 명명한 것이고, 둘째, 등 기름으로 명태 간의 기름을 사용하여 밤을 밝게 해주어 ‘밝을 명(明)’, ‘클 태(太)’, ‘물고기 어(魚)’자로 ‘밝음이 큰 물고기’란 뜻으로 명명된 것이다. 동아시아 국가에서 명태(明太)의 발음을 살펴보면 중국어로는 ‘míngtàiyú’이고, 일본어로는 ‘スケトウダラ’, 러시아어로는 ‘минтай(mintai)’로 우리나라 ‘명태’에서 그 이름이 시작되었음을 짐작할 수 있다. 이러한 명태(明太) 명칭의 의미 및 인식은 한 국가 내에서 시기에 따라, 지역에 따라, 명태(明太)의 특징에 따라 나타나는 명태(明太) 명칭은 파악할 수 있었고, 국가 간의 언어문화 교류 양상에 대한 내용을 파악할 수 있었다. 따라서 본 연구는 한·중·일 삼국의 명태(明太) 명칭 체계를 정립하고 추후 삼국 사이의 언어문화 교류에 대한 연구를 진행하기 위한 기초연구로 활용하고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Fish have a very close relationship with humans, and in Korean, there are more words about fish names than expected. The existence of many words can be interpreted as having many members of the category, so the words expressing each object representing a more detailed discriminatory meaning. Therefore, research on fish names can provide sufficient data to reveal human cognitive patterns. Therefore, this paper examined the perception of pollack in East Asia by examining how pollack was named in Korea from ancient times to the present, where the origin of the name came from, and through what channels the fish name Myeongtae spread abroad, and what types and types of pollack are. First, the origin of pollock was named after the last name of a fisherman living in Myeongcheon Stream, and the last name of the fish owner who caught it. Second, it is named as “fish with great brightness” in the letters of “明” “太” and “魚” by brightening the night using pollack oil with back oil. Looking at the pronunciation of pollock in East Asian countries, it can be guessed that the name began in Korea’s pollock as “míngtàiyú” in Chinese, “スケトウダラ” in Japanese, and “мтаии” in Russian. The meaning and recognition of these pollack names could be identified within a country according to the period, region, and characteristics of pollack, and the contents of the language culture exchange pattern between countries could be identified. Therefore, this study aims to establish a pollack name system in East Asia and use it as a basic study to conduct research on language and culture exchanges between East Asia in the future.
