Objectives: This study aims to examine the experiences and improvement measures of community play environments from the children's perspective and to derive tasks for improving community play environments, thereby contributing to the promotion of children's right to play.
Methods: In order to understand children's experiences according to the play environment by region of residence, children in the 4th to 6th grades of elementary school living in a city selected for the Ministry of Health and Welfare's play innovation leading project and a urban-rural mixed city were selected as research participants. Focus group interviews were conducted in each region using the same interview guide, and the data were analyzed according to the procedures of traditional content analysis methods.
Results: Through analysis of focus group interview data, the community play environment perceived by children was evaluated according to four categories: ‘awareness of play resources’, ‘play time sufficiency’, ‘community play space’, and ‘play space safety’. To improve the community play environment, children demanded ‘expanding play opportunities’ and ‘improving play spaces.’
Conclusions: Based on the results of this study, it was emphasized that the community play environment should be improved to expand children’s play opportunities and create diverse play spaces, and future tasks for creating a community play environment were suggested.
