Various method of cancer diagnosis can be classified into two broad categories. One is to utilize the morphological changes in cellular organelles, and the other is to utilize the chemical changes in our body. Most widely used ones among these tumor-markers are a-FP developed by Abelve 1963, and CEA by Gold in 1965. Recently, these tests are in common use since they are helpful not only for cancer diagnosis but also for the monitoring of therapeutic course and the evaluation of postoperative cancer recurrence. But in Korea, there is not yet a report on the clinical reference value for these tests. So our laboratory tried to establish a reference value over a group of 3,000 normal people in various areas, and the results are summarized as follows : 1. Regional distribution of the study group was Seoul, 1.5%, Chung-buk 30%, Chung-nam 35 %, Kyeong-buk 32%, respectively. 67.5% fo them were males and 32.5% were females. The age group covered from 18 to 59. 2. The reference value for a-FP in each age group showed 7.27 ng/ml, So not showing any age difference. And there was also no difference in that both sex group, showed 7.4 ng/ml. 3. The reference values for CEA were directly related to age. 1.7 ng/ml in teen ages, 2.8 ng/ml in the twenties, 3.8 ng/ml in the thirties, 4.3 ng/ml in the forties, 5.0 ng/ml in the fifties. And there is a sex difference in that mean CEA level of male group(4.3 ng/ml) was 1.6 ng/ml higher than that of female group(2.7 ng /ml). The overall average value for the entire group examined was 3.9 ng/ml.
