This study is subject to analyze the category of Korean grammatical collocation from the perspective of grammar education for Korean language learners for academic purposes based on the theory of systemic functional linguistics. It is a study that reveals the typical uses and characteristics of grammatical collocations written in Korean language academic texts, grammatical collocations written by Korean language learners for academic purposes and reviews the semantic functions performed in academic text.
The use of grammatical collocation in a particular register or genre can be an important component of the content of foreign language education or secondary language education. In particular, it is crucial to internalize genre recognition and to use appropriate grammatical collocation in academic text. So far the existing studies on grammatical collocation in academic text are limited to extracting cataloging grammatical collocation used frequency or revealing structural and functional differences. Although many studies emphasize the importance of grammatical collocation in academic text, only few studies have extracted grammatical collocation representations as educational content or explored genre-specific grammatical collocation in specific academic fields.
In this study, we paid attention to the fact that existing studies on grammatical collocation could not be discussed based on a relatively complete theory, and that attention was paid only to the form of meaning expression of grammatical collocation. Therefore, in order to solve the problem of studying grammatical collocation form a single research perspective, a linguistic theory with universality and relevance was selected, and based on this theory, a grammatical collocation content system was constructed in a specific genre of academic text.
In other words, stratification theory, option and system network concept, lexicogrammar concept, and genre concept as social interaction suggested in systemic functional linguistics establish the concept of grammatical collocation. This is a theoretical premise that illustrates the lexicogrammar features and semantic functions of grammatical collocation. In this thesis, the process of forming grammatical collocation is considered to be a process in which conceptualize and categorize the relationship of things based on context of social cultural and context of situation. Grammatical collocation is seen as the result of the joint operation of three factors: social culture, cognition, and language.
Based on the theory, In chapter 3, by extracting and categorizing typical grammatical collocation from the Korean academic texts selected as model texts, the grammatical collocations used in academic texts were analyzed with the focus on the semantic function. In chapter 4, the corpus was used to analyze the meaning and function of the grammatical collocation for academic purposes in Korean language education. In the sample information of Korean learners primitive corpus, five variables were set, including nationality(Chinese), mother tongue(Chinese), learning purpose(going to university or graduate school), Korean language level(level 6 or higher), and corpus type(written language). By comparing and analyzing grammatical collocation used by Korean learners and grammatical collocation used in model text, the cause of interlanguage usage in the academic texts of Korean learners was revealed. Furthermore, in terms of the comparative study results, the contents of grammatical collocation which represent the meaning of recognition were structured and detailed.
In this study, based on the theory and research method of systematic functional linguistics, Korean grammatical collocation was reconceptualized and categorized form a new perspective to explore the usage and semantic functions in actual language materials. This research is significant in the theory of systematic functional linguistics applied to Korean language, and it is actively promoted as a theory of language education. The study also noted grammatical collocation which is lack of discussion for academic purposes for Korean learners. On the other hand, it is crucial in extracting grammatical collocations used in actual Korean academic texts and academic texts written by Korean learners, and revealing the formal characteristics and semantic functions of the language.
