This study define the motion principle used generally in chinese martial arts by studying the research theories of major sects of chinese martial arts. It will help understand the motion principle and improve training effectiveness, and will be the steppingstone of skill exchange and unity between the sects. Major sects of modern Wushu and traditional martial arts were studied in this research. By analyzing datum recorded in documents such as martial arts textbooks and dictionaries and the following was concluded. The body is recognized as an organic whole, and the nervous system connecting the head to the spine was taken into serious consideration in traditional martial arts theory. This principle says spinal curve may decrease by pulling up and relaxing all the parts from the parietal bone to the coccyx. Also, one should spread and relax the front parts of the body, such as the chest and stomach and spread the back to the right and left by pulling on the spine. In the modern Wushu ``Changquan`` motion theory, however, the principle about the head and neck was omitted, and the position which pushes out the chest and the lumbar curve that adjusts the back, were allowed. This shows contrast between the traditional and modern theories.
