With the help of information technologies, movie production technologies has developed much faster than ever. Environment factors on IMAX-formatted film has different traits compared with standard film. Considering its own technical specificity, allocating IMAX movies to IMAX retrofit would be better for both theater’s revenue stream and viewers’ appreciation. However, Screen quota system being currently executed in Korea regulates all the screens uniformly without considering technological differences or factors. Korean movie should be screened more than 73 days per year regardless of its movie format under the Korean Screen quotas. It means IMAX retrofit should also have Korean movies even though it is not IMAX-formatted.
Many researches on Screen quota has mostly focused on cultural diversities or independent films, however, the research argues whether it would be right to stick to its own regulation without considering the technical features. On the simulation-based estimation, it also shows that to what extent the industry can be distorted under the current Screen quota system which is based on the number of screens compared to the multiplexes. So data analysis suggests it would have much positive influence on viewers’ attitude and theater’s profit while achieving the goal of Screen quota simultaneously when Screen quota is executed not by the number of screens, but by the number of multiplexes.
Qualitative data analysis was done by collecting total number of viewers for each screening: Viewers preference and theater’s preference for screening in the case of Korean movie and IMAX-formatted foreign movie respectively.
The research showed that Korean movies were favored by viewers in the case of standard screens, however, IMAX-formatted foreign movies were favored in the case of IMAX retrofit. On the simulation-based inference, the research shows the distortion effect of the current system. Therefore, it suggests that implementing Screen quota could generate the positive influence on revenue stream of theaters and distributors when it is executed on multiplexes-based rather than screen-based.
