Throughout its long history, human culture has continued to expand and fuse with new cultures through contacts and collisions. Therefore, culture is not at a independent state, and is a product of the times that reflect spirit and social influence that dominates that time period. Today, industrial revolution that has brought the most changes to life of humanity also brought materialistic prosperity. However, abundance of materials also led to expansion of urban areas due to industrialization, and the expansion of the cities encroached on the nature. Self-reflection of the humanity on such destructions of the nature gave rise to the importance of ecology along with the environmental activism in late 1060s. The interest in ecology and environment has become an important issue in the survival of humanity to this day, which extended to efforts to restore and preserve the natural ecology and securing a steady proportion of forestation and parks. As a part of such efforts, interior landscaping, which applies landscape designs in the interior space of structures and buildings by using plants and other materials, have been introduced. First introduced in 1967, interior landscaping provides green shades in space of architectures to maintain and purify the indoor environment and more pleasant environment to humans, in addition to creating diverse designs that reflects the style trends in the art school. Style characteristics of the art school is the source of inspiration not only in interior landscaping but also other related fields and provides diverse motifs.
Thus, this study investigates the style characteristics in the space arts through the style history analysis of Heinrich Wolfflin, as well as the characteristics of modernism and post-modernism through application of concept of circularity in style developments according to Wolfflin's analytical model. The results of the study shows that the foundation of Renaissance classicism and modernism lies in the lucidity of "proportions," "balance," "simplicity," and "forms of geometric lines" based on world of reason and rationality, whereas baroque and post-modernism emphasizes "free curves," motion," "color," and "decorations" based on the exploration of inner world of emotions. Through analysis of interior landscaping works based on standards of such style characteristics of space art, the dominating characteristic of interior landscaping was the trend of "exploration of rational forms." Specially in the interior landscaping from United States and Asian countries, the trend of "exploration of rational forms" is manifested strongly, mostly demonstrating designs that utilize "forms of geometric lines," "proportion" and "balance," and "simplicity." This appears to be the general way of understanding the overall balance with the space. The trend of "exploration of inner world of emotions," as in the style of the art school, accompanies "color" and "decorations" (introduction of ornaments and objet d'art), "free curve" and "motion." The components of "exploration of rational forms" such as "forms of geometric lines," "proportion" and "balance" are partially introduced in combination in "exploration of inner world of emotion" works. Such cross combination of some components appears to be used to break away from the possibility of over simplifying or complicating the trends of "exploration of rational forms" and "exploration of inner world of emotions." Also, another characteristic manifested in the examples of interior landscaping is the decorative effect from the introduction of an objet. There is a need for refinement for artistic understanding of space through the graft of diverse materials in interior landscape designs with applications of objet.
The significance of this study lies in the concretization of characteristics in art styles applied in conventional level through the analysis of interior landscape works in art styles. Also, the study also contributed to deeper understanding of interior landscaping progressing various directions through comparative studies of characteristics of different art styles.
