This paper is designed to research on the connection of Southeast Asian Islamic movements with al-Qaeda and their current situation, focusing on the Jema`ah Islamiyyah(JI) in Indonesia. Many analysts have agreed al-Qaeda is a loose network connected with global terrorist groups, and Southeast Asia is a new theater of al-Qaeda`s operations, and JI is a branch of al-Qaeda in Southeast Asia. In chapter Ⅱ, the connection of al-Qaeda with Islamic movements in Southeast Asia is presented with some explanation of the reality of al-Qaeda and its networks in Southeast Asia. Some scholars have pointed out the growing threat of radical Islam in Southeast Asia, and the connection of the violent attacks with al-Qaeda. The reasons why Southeast Asia has become a major center of al-Qaeda operations are the Afghan connection to the Middle Eastern extremists, the growth of Islamic grievances within Southeast Asian states since 1970s, and convenience for international terrorists activities. In Chapter Ⅲ, the historical background of JI, its connection to al-Qaeda, its training camps and education, its organizational structure and its current situation are mentioned. Historically JI traces its roots to Dar al-Islam. The radical background of JI is connected to the Afghan Jihad war against the previous Soviet Union. In conclusion, the radical movements of Southeast Asian Islam were attributed to the Afghan Jihad war, the participation in al-Qaeda training camps and the war on terror after 9.11. Because of al-Qaeda`s progressive activities and financial assistances in Southeast Asian countries, the radical and extreme activities of JI will be increased and spreaded in Southeast Asian countries as well as in the Western countries.
