마틴 루터의 '믿음'과 에릭 에릭슨의 '신뢰감'의 만남 = Encounter of Faith and Trust: Exploring Martin Luther's Faith and Erik Erikson's Trust

This article is an attempt to compare trust and faith and to evaluate differences and similarities of both. Trust and faith tend to be misunderstood in Christian churches and pastoral ministry. In effect, some people misunderstand trust as faith and vice-versa. Some others misunderstand that faith belongs to trust. This article is based upon the premise that faith is a religious word and trust is a psychological word. This article claims that religious faith and psychological trust are distinctively different from each other while both of them are emotions. This claim is drawn from a functionalist perspective, which derives from a psychology of emotion. The functionalist perspective stresses that emotions have their own roles to perform and relate to other human functions such as cognitive functions and physical functions by playing their roles. This article is an investigation of Martin Luther’s ‘faith’ and Erik Erickson’s ‘trust’ from the functionalist perspective. This investigation concludes faith and trust play different roles but they exist as emotions in order to serve and enhance human relationships. In order to perform pastoral counseling appropriately, it ought to be remembered that faith and trust as emotions play their distinctive roles to enhance human community and interpersonal relationships. It also has to be remembered that faith helps to recognize where trust is among people and between human beings and God, while trust helps to preserve a safe zone in which people can continue to question their faith and Christian life.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문에서 에릭 에릭슨의 신뢰감과 마틴 루터의 믿음을 비교 분석하였다. 목회상담 현장에서 믿음과 신뢰감을 혼돈하는 경향이 있다. 목회상담 현장에서 믿음과 신뢰감을 혼돈함으로서 믿음을 신뢰감으로 종속시키거나 반대로 신뢰감을 믿음의 하나로 단순화시키는 경향이 있다. 본 논문에서는 마틴 루터의 믿음과 에릭슨의 신뢰감을 비교하여 믿음과 신뢰감은 서로 다른 감정이지만 신학이 치료적이기 위해서는 ‘신뢰감’이라는 심리의학적 언어로 ‘믿음’이라는 신학적 언어를 종속시키는 위험을 저지르면 안 된다고 논한다. 또한 반대로 ‘믿음’이라는 신학적 언어로 ‘신뢰감’이라는 심리의학적 언어를 일반화시켜도 안 된다고 주장한다. 감정에 대한 기능주의적 관점을 비평적으로 수용하면서 본 논문에서는 감정으로서 신뢰감과 믿음은 사람과 공동체가 처해진 상황을 해석하고 대응하도록 돕는 기능을 한다고 주장한다. 그러면서 믿음과 신뢰감은 서로 다르지만 인간이 느끼는 감정으로서 신뢰감이 토대가 되어야 믿음의 갈등을 할 수 있을 뿐 아니라 오직 믿음만으로 신뢰관계를 알 수 있다고 주장한다. 결론적으로 목회상담 현장에서 믿음과 신뢰감을 감정으로서 이해하면서 서로 다르지만 믿음의 갈등을 충분히 하도록 돕는 신뢰감으로서 이해하고 사람과 사람의, 사람과 하나님의 신뢰관계가 어떠한지 알 수 있게 돕는 믿음으로서 이해하도록 제안한다.
