다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract) kakao i 다국어 번역

The facade of a building in general is one of the most significant elements in architecture from a design standpoint, as it sets the character for the rest of the building. By definition, fa?ade means the face or front of a building. It at times represents a historical style or a particular function.

The meaning and function of the building facade has been changed: At times, it functions as the structural walls or as the skin cladding. The facade of modern architecture is recognized as a new meaning that separates from the structure of the building. It becomes as essential as interior through the various experiments; pervasive mass media, technical and energy-efficient improvement, interactive designs. etc. The facade of modern architecture is developed into the new architectural status so that it interacts with people in interior as well as in exterior. Besides, in recent years, architects have explored the meaning and function of the building facade in different manners. Some have transformed facades into communication devices. Others have made the facade into a kind of building system that responds to changing occupancies or outdoor conditions, as well as an occupy-able facade in some need of additional spaces or functional necessities.

This study starts with a brief question how the meaning and function of a building facade can be restored its essential role as a considerable element of an architecture in the contemporary society. To begin with, it examines methods for recovering the meaning and function of a building facade. Then it involves an additional occupy-able facade to the existing buildings by using scaffolding structure and prefabricated units. The additional occupy-able facade can include new programs linking with the existing inner space programs. Especially, it deals with a methodological technique with regard to remodeling and renovation of existing buildings. Finally, a design experiment is performed to test and implement the above design research.
