This study aims to examines the characteristic use of Dahoe in Korea and to understand the development of Dahoe and Maedeup for the last century. Dahoe is a term which refers to a string made out by a craftsman in a traditional technique. Today Maedeup is familiar to us, but Dahoe is not so.
Until the Joseon Dynasty, Dahoe has been widely made out and used because it is the basic item of Maedeup, Sool, or Yuso. We can infer a few reasons why Dahoe has been nearly disappeared in its use and skill. Firstly, Dahoe used for the dignity and solemnity of dynasty is not useful anymore since the fall of dynasty. Secondly, since the industrialization, machinemanufactured string replaced hand-made string. Most of all, Dahoe has been not used for itself, but used harmoniously with Maedeup and Sool, which has completed Yuso. Dahoe, Maedeup, Sool and Yuso, all these things are closely intertwined, which pursue the convenience and add the beauty of the things. That is the point of Korean use of Dahoe.
For the last century, Maedeup has been developed along with the change of the times. 1st maedeupjang made ceremonial knots related with death, such as Sangyeo Yuso and Inrowangbun Yuso. 2nd maedeupjang made accessory and ornament knots necessary for marriage and decoration. 3rd maedeupjang has been exerting for creative work to meet the needs of the times based on the traditional knot skill.
