The Present study examined the interplay of mother's marital relationship and mother-adult son's attachment feelings.
Other variables related to mother-adult son's attachment were also examined.
The data were analized based on the responses of 111 mother-son couples. ANOVA, Pearson product moment correlations, and multiple regression analyses were performed for the statistical analyses.
The results were as follows;
1) The absence of spouse, the economical dependency, the education of mother were found as significant variables related to mother's attachment to her son. Mothers who were widows and economically dependent on their sons showed more attachment feelings.
2) Mother's marital relationship was not significantly related to mother's attachment.
3) Child absence, shorter marriage year and higher filial obligation were revealed as significant variables explaining son's attachment feelings toward his mother.
4) Mother's martial relationship, in particular, marital bond and self-disclosure were positively related to son's attachment.
5) Economical dependency and son's attachment significantly contributed to explain the variance of mother's attachment. On the other hand, filial obligation, mother's self-disclosure, son's marital years and mother's attachment were revealed as significant variables explaining the variance of son's attachment.
The result were discussed in term of social-cultural background.
