The Solvent of Trichloroethylene (TCE) being used for washing the metal parts and others of machinery is well known to give hazardous effect to human health.
This study was made to measure the indoor air concentration of TCE and urine concentration of Trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) of workers at working place where TCE is being used for such washing purpose.
As a sample of study, 10 factories located in Seoul area and a total of 161 workers(101 males and 60 females) were selected for the indoor air concentration measurement, urine test and physical complaints check-up.
The duration of study was from March 1 to August 31, 1973. The measurement of indoor air concentration has been made on two different spot air samples, one within the range of one meter from the solution container and the other at the position which is around 5 meter away from the container.
As for urine test for TCAA and physical complaints check-up, the workers were classified into 2 groups, one who actually do the washing job with the solution and the other who are working at distant place from the solution in the same room.
The brief summary of the findings is as follows;
1. The average indoor air concentrations of TCE were 125.7±25.9 (80-220) ppm for the air samples at the spot around 5 meter away from the solution container and 595.0±111.6 (280-890) ppm for the sample taken within the range of 1 meter from the container.
2. The amount of urine concentration of TCAA was found to exceed the threshold limit value of 75㎎/l for a total of 97 workers (59 males and 38 females) which constitute 60.2% of all workers examined.
3. The relationship between the amount of urine concentration of TCAA and the workers service period showed a negative correlation for both male and female workers(r=-0.722, P<0.001 for males, r=-0.583, P<0.0001 for females).
This result simply shoes that the workers who do the washing job are usually being transfered to the other jobs after short period of time of the service.
4. The indoor air concentration of TCE and the urine concentration of TCAA of workers showed a positive correlation. (r=0.073, P<0.001)
5. The liver function tests performed for the workers gave all normal results.
6. As for the physical complaints, the neurological disturbances constituted 80.5%, the highest, of all complaints given by the workers.
