The Effects of Traditional Game Program on the Loneliness and Self-Efficacy of Elderlies

This paper investigates the effect of the traditional game program on the loneliness and self-efficacy of the elderly people (80 years of age and above) with dementia. The aged society is a new social problem that the government and community need to pay attention to. To assess the cultural game effectiveness, this study used the research tool developed by Lee(2017) measuring the loneliness of the elderly, and the questionnaire developed by Hong(1996) measuring their self-efficacy. The contents devised for each program stage consisted of the early stages (first-second session), the middle-term (3rd session-8th session), and the late stage (9th session-10th session). The early stage of activity is focused on the recollection of the childhood of the group members to help them express and understand their past emotions in detail. It is designed to recall their hometown, play on memories, relieve tension, form trust, and explore and re-experience positive experiences in the past. The mid-term activities were designed to help rediscover one's forgotten self through childhood peer relationships through self-opening and dreams of overcoming hardships. The traditional game program showed to affect the quality of life of the elderlies, specifically on their relationships with their family and the society and their sense of belonging. Thus, the program should not only be limited to the elderlies with dementia on nursing facilities and daily care centers but should be a dementia prevention program for the community so that all elderly generations can increase their quality of life through their participation.
