We measured airway resistance in groups of 93 health subjects and 297 pneumoconiotic subjects, to evaluate the changes in airway resistance according to grades of pneumoconiosis classified by radiographic findings and functional impairment of ventilation.
There was a gradual decrease in airway conductance as the disability advanced, but the rate of decrease was remarkably different between moderate and advanced functional impairments of ventilation and was distinct in categories 2 and 3 of radiographic findings. A significant decrease in airway conductance was noted in suspected pneumoconiotics and eve in pneumoconiotics within the normal range of ventilatory function
