This paper is focused on the characteristic of Gugok culture of Joseon literati and researched the origin of the names of the Hwayang-gugok(華陽九曲) formed after Song Siyeol’s death.
According to the poetry of Zhu Xi’s Jeongsa architecture painting by Seo Geojeong, Wuyi Gugok-do was brought into this country in 15th Century. Gugok Garden(九曲園林) management and Gugok poetries(九曲詩歌) have caught on domestic circumstances of Joseon in 16th Century. Especially the Kiho School followed Gugok Garden management of Zhu Xi, developed new scenic sights. They showed off cultural superiority and succession of Zhu Xi’s scholastic mantle, while writing Gugok poetries and painting Gugok-do. Song Si-yeol put emphasis on Daemyeong Euiri Discourse to keep faith with the Ming Dynasty and Jonju Yangyi to respect the Zhou Dynasty based on the studies of Zhu Xi and Yi I.
Song’s follower Gwon Sangha and Kim Jinok, descendants of Kim Jangsaeng, decided on the names of Hwayang-gugok after his life. The names included some historical sites of Song Siyeol. Min Jinwon engraved the Gugok names put together the physical places on rocks of Hwayang-gugok.
This paper tried to find a correlation with the works existing and assumed the age that they were painted, through the analyses of the poetry and prose related to paintings of Hwayang-gugok.
According to some records, there were picture books of Hwayang Gugok-do supported by Kim Jinok in 1719 and painted by Jeong Seon and Jo Yeong-seok from 1721 to 1736. Gwon Sineung, grandson of Gwon Seop, drew Gugok-do including Seonyu-dong in 1756. The literati studied under Ki Jeongjin who uphold the school ties of Song Siyeol in Jolla province such as Kim Nokhyu and Ki Dong-gwan shared the Hwayang Gugok folding screens in the late 19th Century.
These are related to an example of Hwayang Gugok eight fold folding screen housed in the Chosun Minhwa Museum. There are two picture books of Hwayang Gugok-do from Gwon Sangha’s family made by unidentified person after 1762 and Song Siyeol’s family painted by Yi Hyeong-bo who was a descendent of Yi Deoksa father-in-law of Song Si-yeol in 1845. In addition to three artworks in Hwayang-dongji were edited by Seong Hae-eung before 1839.
Hwayang Gugok-do embodied the thought connected between Zhu Xi and Song Si-yeol. Song’s thought and studies inherited his school through the paintings of Hwayang Gugok-do.
