Reading spaces such as bookstores and libraries are sites where the human practices of reading and the circulation of ideas and knowledge are enacted, and where collective consciousness is generated and disseminated. Scholarship on these spaces occupies a central place in the intellectual history and literary culture of any given era, yet the cultural history of the bookstore remains remarkably underexplored. This article interprets the “leftist bookstores” of colonial Korea in the 1920s and 1930s as material apparatuses of transformative movements and as collective reading spaces, and decodes their significance within cultural history. Functioning as conduits for the distribution of ideological literature, as mediating sites for reading circles and student and youth movements, and as bases for informal publishing and distribution in defiance of censorship and surveillance, these leftist bookstores served as nodes of connection within socialist culture. This article examines four case studies: Saenggak Bookstore, the Mujanja Bookstore in Gangneung, Sinheung Bookstore, and Minjung Seowon. Through these cases, it traces how the movement to reconstruct the Korean Communist Party, regional activist networks, the demand for social-scientific reading material, the sale of banned books and the importation of foreign publications, the organization of reading circles, student movements, and publishing operations intersected with and through the bookstore as a shared medium. In doing so, the article argues that leftist bookstores were not merely clandestine strongholds of socialist activists, but were cultural sites that simultaneously illuminate the formation of modern reading culture and popular intellectualism, the spread of socialist culture, and the transnational character of reading spaces in colonial Korea.
