데이터 시각화에서 시각적 은유의 개념적 은유에 관한 연구 = Conceptual Metaphor as Visual Metaphors in Data Visualization

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

As the data becomes vast and complex, it is not easy to understand its content, therefore aproper data visualization is required. The purpose of this study is to identify the visual forms ofthe elements shown in the title for each case and suggest that a visual metaphor is needed basedon the concept of data visualization. The study suggests that metaphorical expressions arerequired in data visualization process so users can understand the data. In the study,characteristics of expression, types of data visualization, and conceptual metaphor were set asthe criteria for analyzing the examples. Metaphor can create information and aid in understandingthe abstract patterns and relationships among data. Visual metaphors are similar to that of theconceptual metaphor which is mainly used in language. The results on the analysis of theconceptual metaphor patterns from data visualization examples came in the order as follows:ontological metaphor, directional metaphor, and structural metaphor. First, data visualization asstructural metaphor showed language as the common analysis element mapping the flow oflanguage structures from each chapter of the book. Second, ontological metaphor revealed as themostly employed metaphor in the examples. Ontological metaphor is a metaphorical process bymapping a first concept to a second concept in a container form. Third, directional metaphorshowed mainly in time series data visualization having direction as a common analysis element.
Understanding conceptual metaphor among other metaphors, and employing them in visual formsgives an identity to uniformed data visualization as well increasing user's understanding.
Therefore, metaphorical expression through conceptual metaphor is a possible method to employin data visualization process.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

데이터가 방대해지고 복잡해질수록 이를 이해하는 것이 쉽지 않기 때문에 적절한 데이터 시각화 구현이 요구된다. 본 연구는 각 사례에 해당되는 제목의 소재들이 어떠한 시각적 형태로 보여줬는지를 확인하며 데이터 시각화의 콘셉트에 맞는 시각적 은유가 필요하다는 것을 제시하고자 한다. 즉, 데이터시각화에 적용된 시각적 은유가 개념적 은유 범주에서 어떻게 적용되었는지를 파악해 정보 사용자의이해증진을 위해 데이터 시각화 구현 프로세스에 은유적 표현이 필요하다는 것을 제시한다. 본 연구에서는 데이터 시각화 사례를 분류 분석하여 조사하였다. 분석의 요목은 크게 데이터 시각화 분석 항목,표현의 특성, 데이터 시각화의 유형과 개념적 은유로 구성된다. 정보를 형성하고 추상적인 패턴과 관계를 이해하는 능력에는 은유가 있어 시각적 은유는 언어적 은유인 개념적 은유와 유사하다. 개념적은유로 구현된 데이터 시각화를 분석한 결과, 존재론적 은유, 방향적 은유와 구조적 은유 순 분포로나타났다. 첫째, 구조적 은유의 데이터 시각화 사례에서는 언어가 공통 분석 항목으로 나왔고, 이는 책에 등장하는 언어 구조의 흐름을 관계시각화로 매핑하였다. 둘째, 데이터 시각화 중에서 존재론적 은유가 가장 많이 활용된 것으로 조사되었다. 존재론적 은유는 한 개념을 어떤 콘테이너에 매핑하는 은유 과정이다. 데이터 시각화는 모두 제목에 등장하는 소재들을 사용해 사용자들이 연상하기 쉬운 시각적 형태로 표현해 데이터의 간의 차이, 유사성, 분포를 객관적으로 보여준다. 셋째, 방향적 은유는 모두 시계열 데이터의 시간시각화로 구현되어 표현의 특성 중에서도 방향이 공통된 항목으로 적용된 것으로 분석되었다. 획일화되어 보이는 데이터 시각화에 은유 중에서 개념적 은유에 대해 이해하고 시각적으로 표현하여 데이터에 정체성을 부여하는 것이 사용자의 이해를 높인다. 따라서 데이터 시각화에적용된 시각적 은유가 개념적 은유 범주에서 어떻게 적용되었는지를 파악해 데이터 시각화 구현 프로세스에 은유적 표현의 가능성을 제시한다.
