Caryl Churchill’s Far Away shows contemporary myths omnipresent in our time. Myth, a form of messages, discourses, and signification determines and dominates human’s thinking and behaviors. Logical and systematic mythology of Roland Barthes explains myths in Far Away more clearly. The meeting of Churchill’s play Far Away and Barthes’ Mythologies makes a new signification in the same way as myth. It is a mythologist’s mission to recognize, expose, and destroy myths. Both Barthes and Churchill aim to be mythologists. Their writings do not start a revolution but contribute to making the world new. This study is based on Barthes’ Mythologies, an ideological critique of popular culture’s language activities and the first semiotic analysis on them. This study does a semiotic analysis on myths in Far Away.
