The extent to which railroad companies, and other common carriers are liable to consignors and consignees of freight, is a question of no small moment, and by no means free from difficulty. There are valuable treatises in existence upon the subject, but they are not written with a view to popular usefulness, and some later decisions have served to establish the rules of damages upon clearer principles than were formerly recognised.
