The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of intra-articular injection of sodium hyaluronate in temporomandibular joint.
Intra-articular injection with sodium hyaluronate was performed in fourteen advanced temporomandibular joint disorders patients who experienced no improvement from conservative therapy or who had traumatic injury caused by an accident or surgery. We injected sodium hyaluronate to the superior joint cavity and estimated the symptomatic change in the first week and the fourth week after the injection.
The results obtained were as follows :
1. The usage of sodium hyaluronate on temporomandibular joint was effective in improving of mouth opening limitation and relieving pain during opening the mouth. It also was effective in reducing clicking but to a less extent.
2. As to the tenderness, no significant effect was found in the first week, but there observed significant effect of reducing tenderness is the fourth week.
3. The conditions of patients showed better improvement in the fourth week than in the first week.
Above results suggest that intra-articular injection of sodium hyaluronate was effective for the treatment of advanced temporomandibular joint disorders with degeneration of temporomandibular joint.
