Kim Tae-seok was dispatched to Japan and Qing in 1908 as an art commissioner of imperial family belonging to the department of royal household. Then, as a result of his art observation, he published 《Seungsa Inbo(乗槎印譜)》 in Tokyo and 《Cheongyu Inbo(淸游印譜)》 in Beijing. This study is to explore the art history significance of the two books of seal collections.
Two books of Kim Tae-seok have two important meanings in their external form as a work of art. It is the first book of seal collections made by a modern publishing technique called lithographic printing as a domestic artist of seal carving, and it is the first book of seal collections that shows the specialized form of the character engraved on the side of a seal.
Both of the two books carry the preface, postface and impressions of seals of influential figures from Tokyo and Beijing. In particular, the 《Seungsa Inbo》 contains the evaluations of people who represent the Japanese seal engraving world in the Meiji era, and you can see the exchanges between the Korean and Japanese seal engraving world in the modern era. The 《Cheongyu Inbo》 contains the seals of the bureaucrats at the late Qing dynasty under the command of Yuan Shikai(袁世凱), and it gives us an idea of the background that engraved the seal of President Yuan Shikai and the Great Seal of the Republic of China by Kim Tae-seok in later.
Two books are rich in the personality of Kim Tae-seok's personal portfolio. The reason he overcame financial difficulties to create book of seal collections was his intention to survive as an artist who lost his country in a foreign country by actively utilizing book of seal collections in his own career. What is noteworthy in this paper is that in 1908, the Korean Empire was officially conducted an observation for the purpose of art itself, and there was also confirmed that seal engraving and book of seal collections existed in any form in the art.
