In this paper, I carried out a comparative study on the history of the mask dance drama of foreigners and “Granting a tribute to the emperor” in Korea and China, and the results are as follow.
First, considering the fact that the dance of Ho(胡) and the dance of Lion were popular in both Korea and China, the mask dance drama of foreigners who grant a tribute to the Emperor in Goryeo(高麗) period could be begun with the influence of Ho-waves(胡流) also.
Second, “Granting a tribute to the emperor” is intrinsically intended to beautify the ruler, so there is no difference between both of the mask dance drama of foreigners in Korea and China.
Third, considering the history of the mask dance drama of foreigners in China, the mask dance drama of foreigners who grant a tribute to the emperor in Korea was never a one-off play. It would have been performed repeatedly in Early Goryeo(高麗) period. But owing to the changes in the international situation, it would have been difficult to be performed in late Goryeo(高麗) and Joseon(朝鮮) period, so it would not have been handed down.
Forth, both of the mask dance drama of foreigners who grant a tribute to the emperor in Goryeo(高麗) and Ming(明) period are part of performing arts of sacred mountain such as Sandae (山臺) or Aoshan(鰲山). Because of this, they can be a keyword in writing the history of mask dance drama of East Asia.
Fifth, “Granting a tribute to the emperor” in Goryeo(高麗) was the the mask dance drama on the Chaebung(綵棚), so it can be regarded as a form of the mask dance drama of the Sandae(山 臺). Based on this, I think this is the fastest documented case in the history of the mask dance drama of the Sandae(山臺). Currently, most of Korean researchers think that the mask dance drama of the Sandae(山臺) was formed in the 18th century. So my view will precipitate a new debate in the future.
